Default PSA: Wago just rolled out a new product that is ideal for Disco repairs

I had to undo an aftermarket amp install and splice the entire wiring harness back together. These would’ve saved a lot of time. Loads of applications. Thought it’d be helpful to share.

Electrician here.

Not a fan of Wagos except when they're the only option. I've seen too many blade style connectors burn up, and DC power that issue is only exacerbated. Also no weather sealing.

Much recommend using heat shrink butt crimp connectors where possible. Over time the blades in Wagos and similar connectors lose tension, get loose, and start to get hot becoming a fire risk.

No No No No No wirenuts and household wire connections in verhicles!

They would make quick work of household wiring though.

Wago specifically says they're suitable for automotive applications. Do you have support for Wagos losing tension over time? I build homes for a living and haven't once seen a faulty Wago in the eight years I've been using them. I can't speak to other brands, but Wagos have been fully reliable for me.

For those wanting to use these in high-moisture environments, Wago makes gel boxes for them, and specifically, again, list them for automotive use: https://www.wago.com/us/discover-wir...lbox-from-wago

Agreed about wire nuts, but Wagos aren't wire nuts. Wagos are suitable for auto applications.

I second on crimping. Invest in a good crimping tool, you will love how easy it is to make durable and safe electric connections. There is also 4:1 heat shrink with glue liner available. The high shrink ratio makes makes it sit very tight, the glue seals it completely.

I don't have pictures to prove anything if that's what you're asking, but I have seen lots of push in connectors burnt up in person. The issue as that as they carry current they tend to create just a little more heat than a crimp (in automotive) or a quality wire nut (in residential) which causes the loss of spring tension, just like a back stabbed receptacle or light switch. Doubly an issue in higher amp draw circuits.

I do more maintenance/repair/addition type work than new construction. They do seem to last several years before it happens which is why folks who work on new construction don't seem to experience the after effects. I don't think I've seen any burned up that were in houses any less than 10 years old, but even with a 10+ year lifespan I don't like to take the risk when the alternatives are so easy and affordable, and the effects of a failure can be so high even if it is several years down the road. Cheap insurance.

IDK, I was just trying to post something helpful for the community, not start a thing. Mods, feel free to delete this thread. @The Deputy

No thing started as far as I'm concerned, I just wanted to share a cautionary tale based on my experience. If they were are reliable as other methods I'd be completely in favor of them. Constructive conversation is the reason forums like this exist.
