Default purchasing another discovery but some ?s first

I had a 97 D1 and loved it. I wanted something newer with lower miles and was looking at the 03/04 because I noticed that they have a larger 4.6l engine and I like the headlights. the 97 had a manual locking diff and I see that the 03 had a auto locking diff and in 04 they changed back to the manual diff. what is better as in less problems and better off road? can someone tell me when they started with the auto diff.

thanks for any info

Mark

'03 doesn't have a CDL, the '04 does, and it has helped me a few times already. I love my '04, some people state it's the best year.

The 03 does not have an autolocking diff. They didn't put that on Disco's until 2005. (LR3)

Ok, the American guys can calm down. The LR3 is still a Disco. It is badged Discovery everywhere else in the world. To me the LR2 was a stupid re-name for the Freelander because and LR2 has already been made. My buddy got a new LR2 in 2006 and on the title it still says Freelander...

ok so the 03 has a high / low only but the diff does not lock correct? the sales guy at the dealer told me that the 03 diff is better cause it does it all by itself guess he was a clown.

I think liar would be more appropriate. It goes between high and low, but does not lock the transfer case. If it was me, I would go back and call him out on it. Tell him to read the forums before trying to sell a car.

From someone who has a 97, go for the 04. It is what I am going for one of these days...Actually, I'll probably just take the 97 and cut the back to fit a D2 rearend on, do the headlight conversion, and add a 4.6. Then I'll have one...

I sold the 97 because I was traveling a lot and with the price of fuel these days I purchased a VW wagon and got about 22 mpg instead of the 13 or 14 I got with the D1 but now things have changed and i'm back to driving 6k a year and I missed the D1 so much so I figured I would start looking again and high teens I can get a 04 with 50k on it or so seems like a nice machine for the money.
