Exclamation Question about transmission not getting in gear

I drive a 03 discovery II. I was driving on the hwy and it just came off gear. I can move the shifter through the gears and it feels normal but it seems to stay in neutral. The oil level looks fine and the linckage on the outside seems to be doing what it is supposed to. Does anyone have an idea of what could be going on? Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Put the transmission in neutral and then move the transfer case shifter back into high range.

Thanks spike555. I am able to go from 4 low to 4 high and back but putting it back in drive, reverse or any other gear does not do anything. It is like it stays in neutral. Any other idea?

Does any light or display change indicating that you are changing gear positions? The handle basically moves the XYZ switch on driver side of transmission, and that signals the tranny ECU, which connects to the BDU and drives display. So maybe cable is not turning the switch. Also check fuses 12 under hood and 24 & 25 inside truck.

Could also be clip 10 on attached drawing from RAVE. Should be able to see this move when someone shifts the gears around, careful when under there, it may start working when you don't expect it.

Diagnosis 101: have you checked the fluid level? Is it full?” is it burnt?
Diagnosis 102: have some get in the truck and put it in gear while you’re outside checking to see if the drive shafts are turnings.
Is your drive shaft still there or on the side of the highway?

oooh, I'd hope it is neither of these, but they are also highest on the list after the CDL. Would have thought that if "oil level looks fine" they would have noticed the shafts, and the XYZ cable, unless checking the engine oil... Tranny fluid checked at a plug on front side of tranny pan.... #19 on attached drawing from RAVE shop manual.

I once saw a car on a lift for 1-1.5 hrs that towed in with a tranny problem, before someone notice the drive shaft was gone. Who looks at a drive shaft? unless you own a Disco.

True, and a missing shaft lets the transfer case send all the power to the path of least resistance. Would the '03 have the locking capacity at fingertips, or would he be able to twist the bolt on top of the transfer case?

Well, if it is a shaft laying on side of road, knocked out by striking an object (pothole, dodging a possum, etc.) , hope it is covered by insurance as we have had a couple of posts about that.
