Default Question on Coin and Ashtray assembly

I was hearing some rattling in my dashboard, so I removed the climate control unit and coin/ashtray assembly to see where the noise was coming from.

Found that the springs on the coin/ashtray assembly were "hanging" and while driving probably swinging and hitting the plastic coin and ashtray containers.

Need your help - does anyone know the purpose of these springs? If yes, what do they do, how do they work and how do you correctly assemble them?

See pictures below

One thing weird I found with these is that the coin holder and ashtray and drink holder ALL have a LOCK underneath each one and I guess when you're travelling rough terrains through the jungle (hehe...) they don't pop out! Hmmm....

Thanks in advance for your guys help!

The springs are there to push out the coin and ash tray. When you close the ash tray it is supposed to stop flush with the center gauge bezel then you push it in to open and the spring assists buy pushing it open. When reinstalling the tray and coin holder the spring will sit behind them and push on the back of them.

Hey LR, what you said is exactly what I thought. However can't make heads or tails of how the spring should be installed. If it's not too much of an inconvenience, can you take a pic of the way your spring is installed and post it?

Thanks

Al

Your springs may be broken.
Meaning, the retainers for the springs on the plastic tray are broken.
That is how my D2 came.
I had to order a new tray.

If your retainers work -
Remove the ash tray.
Position the spring correctly.
Put in the tray.
the spring will make the tray operate as -

push in = tray glides out.
Push tray in again - locks in.

Quite elegant actually.

Where did you buy the new tray? Atlantic British sells one and it's for $140 + tax + shipping. Was it worth it to replace yours?

Default Cheap fix

Someone posted on a forum the quick fix. Remove the drawer and line the spring back up. Use a zip tie to snug it back against the drawer weaving the zip tie in the holes near the location. I don't have a schematic of the fix but it works. I repaired mine a while back wondering how I was going to fix it.
