see S, SE, HSE, SD, G4 and any other models [Forum] - DiscoWeb Message Boards

But IMHO, the purchase of a posh pre-owned pile of sheetmetal should be accompanied by an inspection by a competent mechanic who works on the beasts. That hour or so of time can save you big dollars. Trim level and modest electronic enhancements don't carry the same weight as head gaskets, cracked oil pump, clogged cooling system, cracked block, etc. Some owners have been known to paint over check engine lights, etc.

You can download the tech and owners manuals for free below. You can also use www.statewidelist.com to search all of craigslist in your state for Rover, and get the output listed by metro area, to see what's out there. Look at several if you can.

A great price posted here (other than a gift) was a D2 with 117 miles, garage kept, oem gasoline, eccentric owner, sold to member RoxieMoxie for $2000. Probably won't see that too often.

The "S" was the base model, base radio, no sun roofs, no leather, 16" wheels and a lack of some of the general frills the others had.

Thanks for the replies,I would definitely consider a ''S'' model if the price is right. There is a 04 for sale near me but he is asking $7600 and KBB values it for $6000 so im not even going to waste my time with it.

I'd say offer the guy $6000 and if he doesn't take it walk away. For all you know he could be desperate to sell it. I have an 04 and I love it although right now it is 27 degrees out and I'm about to go change the valve cover gaskets and throttle body heater plate. Oh well.

Edit: Also get it checked out before giving the money to him if he does agree to give it to you for $6k.

The S model also comes without SLS, so no air bags just coils and shocks on the rear, also could be considered a plus. :-)

But you must look closely, many S models were ordered with extra options, Mine has the "cold weather package" which includes heated seats, windshield, gate window, and mirrors.

I also found that while is has the base radio, the speakers and amps are the same as for the high end Harmon Kardon stereo on other models. I put a Kenwood head unit in mine and a 300 watt subwoofer and amp, sounds better than the top of the line offered with all the same door and A pillar speakers. The Nav feature on the HSE models is now outdated and useless anyways, who wants to read one line of scrolling text while driving???

Another difference is basic front bumper with no body colored end caps, meaning also no fog lights.

trailer hitch receiver was optional and not ordered on my S model.

Everything else about the engine and drivetrain are the same right down to the faulty oil pump.

I got My 03 S and added the Hitch, took 20mins. The wiring is there for the Fog lamps, so you could add you own, I plan to. And I am glad for the lack of Air bags and heater seats. I paid $4000. for mine with 90k on it. The 04 will have the coveted CDL, I had to add my own and it cost about $630. for the CDL and Shifter, I did the labor myself.
