RE: quote from driveline shop. how does this sound
I bought my own parts from carquest (three u-joints and a center ball kit) for $80.
Had my local driveline shop replace it all...it was only $95.
$550 seems kind of steep...I had my friend take off my front driveshaft and that is what I took in. Handed it over and picked it up three hours later.
Maybe I just got an abnormally good deal, but $550 seems like a lot of $$ in my opinion!

No freakin way man!! For less than $400 you could get an HD Tom Wood's driveshaft. The rear should be fine as long as you service it when you do the front, and check the rotoflex for signs of cracking. What kind of driving are you planning to do, offroad a lot mainly on road DD?

The front drive shaft needs the double cardon rebuilt with zerks and a center ball kit. The rear d/s is usually fine, but with bigger lifts (3" and up) the roto can fail much quicker. At the end of the rear drive shaft look for this. That is the rotoflex coupler.

I bought a brand new driveshaft from Driveshaftsuperstore.com for the front of our Jeep Grand Cherokee last year for $200. All brand new stuff and double-cardin joint, spicer joints, great craftsmanship...included shipping. The jeep driveshaft doesn't look fundamentally any different than the Land Rover front driveshaft. Reason I went that way is because the cost to weld on a new slip yoke was more than buying a new driveshaft.
Replacing the rear U-joint shouldn't take more than an hour and a half. But if he changes one, might as well change both.
