Default Radiator Drain Mod

This is a small deal but thought I would share.

My neighbor has a mechanic shop and needed some apple trees cut down so he performed the in-line thermo mod for me while I cut down his trees. He said the radiator drain plug was odd and had a rubberized seal. Was worried it might leak. I was puzzled because the rave manual shows no drain on the radiator. I called the dealer in Omaha to get a new plug. They said there was no plug but did say that British models had a sensor of some kind in that hole.

Long story short, a 20mm x 1.5 thread pitch drain petcock with a 90 degree bend will work. I will put a short hose on it to hang down past the tie rods. I found several on-line but will try to find one local first.

Anybody else ever run into this?

I'm guessing you don't have Secondary Air Injection.

I think you might have the answer for my problem
My disco's radiator is leaking and I am trying to order a new one from eBay but there are 3models as I see. For manual transmission, automatic trans with sensor hole and automatic transmission without sensor hole. I dont know if mine has a sensor or not lol
Would you help me to figure it out if you know how?
Sorry for hijacking the topic ://

They are easily identifiable. Check out this video to help identify if your engine is equipped w/ SAI.

That drain hole is really a temperature sensor hole for secondary air. If your truck doesn't have secondary air, the hole isn't used. I've bought both types of radiators for my non secondary air Disco and the newer style just has a plug in the hole that you can remove for the sensor, or leave in place if you don't have the sensor. The only real radiator drain we have is a bolt on the water pump (drains to below the heads) and the bottom hose.

But your idea of a drain hose is a good one. Draining the radiator from the other locations is super messy. That setup just won't work for SAI trucks because they'll have a sensor in the hole that you're using.

Right; you can buy either. I have bought a couple of the cheaper (newer) ones and they both had plugs pre-installed.
