Just picked up this 2000 Disco. Trying to get a few things sorted out.


Truck has been sitting for a few days. Was just about to do the FV308 PCV mod but I happened to notice I am leaking coolant. Traced it all the way back up to this screw hole which otherwise seems to only be for securing the shroud/cover.





A couple days ago I noticed the screw was pretty loose, so I tightened it..

Anyone seen this before? Seems hard to believe I could have caused a leak in this way......

please don’t tell me my only real solution is now replacing the entire radiator because of something so dumb 🤬🤬🤬

 

It’s a common area of leaks. Get a new rad and don’t put that screw back until you cut 1/4 inch off the tip to prevent this

 

holy smokes batman. Tried to use some RTV to plug up the leak temporarily. No dice, leaking like a siv

Cannot believe it. Never would have thought something so innocent could literally pop the rad. Didn’t even think it was worth searching for it was so ridiculous

Was bout to swap to a 180 thermostat anyway, so woohoo i guess we will add a new radiator to the project

She’s already beating me up and i haven’t even had a chance to enjoy the truck yet!

 

Be careful of the oil and trans cooler lines when doing the rad swap, those connectors are pretty suspect if you remove them or put too much pressure on them in my experience. Other than that it's not a bad job, a couple of annoying screws to deal with but that's about it.

 

You can get the coolers out by removing 1 bolt and then gently wiggling them out from their mounts leaving them in place. Certainly take those OEM screws and cut off 1/4 so they won't crack the plastic tanks again!

 

Happened to me on the first week of disco ownership. I now put washers to act as spacers under the screw.

 

LOL, sounds like same exact lesson learned for me I guess....

Went ahead and bit the bullet -- doing the rad and the whole hose kit from AB. Throwing in an Ultragauge and new temp sensor as well so i can keep a close eye

Perhaps it was good it happened as I was going to drive her down to the shore ~100 miles Friday and at least now I will have more peace of mind about the cooling system health at least.
