Default Is it really OK to jack on the oil sump?

I知 thinking about replacing the motor mounts while I have everything easily accessible during my HG job I知 currently in the middle of. RAVE says jacking on the oil sump is the appropriate way to support the engine while replacing the mounts, but all my experience working on cars tells me cast aluminum sumps and jacking on them is a recipe for disaster.

I've done it on a LR with a block of wood between the sump and the jack.

Use a wide block of wood between the jacks and sump. Have at it.

I guess since it's just the block, there's that much less weight than before when the heads and intake manifold were also on there.

Doesn't matter, but that too. I did it with the engine fully assembled and installed. No problem.

Remember the transmission. It's been awhile since I did my swap but I think I remember their is a support under the transmission. You will be raising the transmission with the engine. You can use 2 jacks, one to support the transmission to offset some of the load if you are concerned with jacking under the engine's sump.

That sump is really thick it is not a cheap thin piece. Just make sure the wood goes from side to side.

Block of wood and a bottle jack. I like to unbolt the upper fan shroud, that way the fan can move freely up. I usually pay close attention to the large electrical wiring loom running along the fire wall, the intake manifold will squeeze it. Just did this job last weekend.

Thankfully I'm choosing to do this in the middle of a head gasket replacement. Literally nothing is attached to the engine right now.
