Default Rear Diff

I was changing my diff oils today, and after changing the front i moved onto the rear and when I removed the drain plug it came out looking like liquid metal, and there was a good amount of metal shards stuck to the magnet, but no big chunks came out...

It is an 03 discovery with 64k miles. She was driving just fine before i changed it and she drove home just fine...is this normal?

Oh and thanks for the help with the SES light, it went off this morning.

No, not normal. You're shredding something in the diff.

Start looking for a good used 3rd. member, you are about to need one.

X2... its usually the spider gears and cross shaft. Traction control is pretty hard on those parts.

Does anyone happen to know where I can find a replacement...new or used? And is this something that can be done in your garage or should I just take it to a shop?

Great Basin Rovers offers diffs with new gears or re-manufactured diffs. 1-801-486-5049.

Bill, who I really like, will charge you way to much for a replacement.
How mechanical are you, can you replace it your self?

It's easy to swap out the rear diff. Two sockets, one for the axle drive member bolts, one for the diff carrier to axle housing bolts and two wrenches for the rear propshaft to pinion flange bolts.
