My old D2 did that, needed new hinges.

Cause, 1st rain of the year some moron in a Bronco rear ended me due to his almost bald tires. Upon inspection I could see nothing obvious and it was a very slight tap. I later noticed water and spent several hours trying to adjust the hinges to no avail.

I took it to a friend who had a body shop at the time and he confirmed the hinges were slightly bent. So I had him replace them and never had anymore problems while I had it.

 

It should only take about 60-90 minutes to replace the rear door hinges. I replaced mine and it closes fine. I think that the previous owner's kids played on the ladder with the door open and bent the hinges. Good luck!

 

I just went through this issue, rear door was sticking for months and finally (while camping of course) the rear door jammed and would not open. Here is what I did:
1. Ordered replacement hinges from RoverParts.
2. Remove Spare Wheel
3. Get in car and gently! kick the rear door open.
4. Remove rear door trim
4a. Jack up rear door until bumper raises a couple of inches
5. Loosen top and bottom hinges until the door moved up.
6. Nip up bolts, lower jack and check door alignment as it is about to close.
7. Repeat until you get the door to be a couple of millimeters too high.
8. Torque up the door bolts.
9. Put spare back on door.
10. Validate that the door is closing and opening correctly (Repeat if not)
11. Return new hinges to Roverparts :-)
PS: May need to replace door seal, not sure yet, but I live in AZ so it is more of a dust issue than a rain issue.
Obviously my hinges were not damaged.

Im going to have to check mine, I get a little bit of rain but the dust is my issue as well. dusty AZ.

 

I adjusted mine similarly to Philnewel’s explanation above, but didn’t take anything apart. I loosened the bolts attaching the hinge fittings to the car, then I lifted up on the (now) rear corner of the door and had my wife snug the bolts up. The first try I went too high so we repeated not quite as high and it works well.
