Sitting in the driveway today it occurred to me that the rear resonator and rear exhaust out look droopy and pose a hazard for backing out of a hole. I went by a muffler shop and the owner showed me some pictures of Disco IIs with a side out--through the rear quarter panel. He said it could be easily accomplished with a 90 degree turn and an extension to just outside the body panel.

Has anyone done this and are there any negatives?

Yeah Zonk did, it looks great. I'll be doing it soon. I'm also going to make a stainless cutout plate for the exhaust.

 

Some people have speculated that it may cause to much heat and could damage the plastics on the vehicle's. I'm not sure I buy it.

 

Issue I see here. There is no protection from jamming that 1/4 panel, I've done it. Waiting to install the tactical rovers rear bumper which extends out to the wheel well giving you sort of a "slider" for that panel. If you jam that panel up, the where does you exhaust go?

 

Exhaust will probably bend inwards. I have a Greg Davis bumper, which offers the most protection of that panel(2x4" steel slider welded to the rear bumper and bolted to the wheel well) and I'm pretty sure that will deter most damage.

 

Looks great! Which muffler is that? I assume you changed the middle muffler? I like the trim piece. I could not find one at the time. The shop that did mine did muscle cars. The owner told me to get a piece of d fuel line... Slit it and mount for protection. Since then I went thru a 'black out' look and removed previous chrome tip and painted the pipe. I replaced the center muffler years ago with a SS Borla.

The location of the cut out would have changed it I had a Greg Davis bumper or opted for a rear bumper with side aprons. Probably would have exited it differently if I had gone that route.

 

You might have some luck checking for stainless trim or "beauty" rings through marine suppliers.

 

Awhile back when my rear was stock I backed off of a rock and it grabbed my resonator and twisted it around the rear axle. Eventually it pinched it and the flange under the exhaust manifold broke open and I had that repaired and dumped the resonator. Haven't regretted it since.

 

I guess I should find the ring before I cut the hole to be sure it is the right size.

I'm not too concerned about the plastic. I've held my hand at the exhaust and it didn't burn me from about 4 inches away.

I can't remember the brand but I think the muffler is called a super 44. Something close to that anyway. Makes my turtle sound fast. Removing the resonator should give it a tiny bit more rumble.
