Default Rear view mirror cant get ball/swivel back into housing?

So i knocked my rear view mirror of the windscreen and it seems the actual swivel mechanism came out of its housing and it doesn't want to snap back in even with a lot of force. I am afraid I will break the mirror if I try any harder. The ball looks as though it should seat nicely in the socket but it doesn't go in no matter how hard I try to press it into place.

I am wondering if anyone has any tricks they could share. I also wondering if anybody know if the mirror glass can come out so I can push harder to try to seat the swivel ball into the back of the mirror. Here's some pics..

Thanks!
Matt

I had happened within the first month of purchase. I simply used brute force to force it back in. A little bit of grease may help.
