Default Rear view mirror question

2003 D2

Does anyone know what the sensor on the rear view mirror does that faces the windshield?

The reason I ask is I want to buy a new mirror with a back up screen as part of the mirror but take it apart and put the new mirror and wiring into the standard mirror's housing so I still have the stock look. So the question really is by unplugging it will there be any issues?

I don't mind losing the compass or the HomeLink buttons.

Thanks,

It’s part of the “auto dim” functionality which works by comparing the ambient outside light (the front sensor) with the presence of headlight light shining in to the mirror (back sensor) and adjusting the dimming as needed. The truck won’t care what you do with it. There are 3 wires going in to the mirror, a power, ground, and a reverse wire so that the dimming is turned off when the truck is in reverse. I wrote up the colors a while back when I swapped out my damaged ‘99 model year mirror with an ‘03 year mirror.

The real problem is your plan of disassembling the old mirror, the photo chromatic dimming feature does not take well to any sort of damage. However, I am very intrigued so let us know how it goes either way!
