Default Rebuilt Engine with Tick

My 2003 has been my side project after it blew an engine a year or so ago. I was originally going to buy a Turner block for it, but my girlfriend's Dad and I found a replacement engine and we rebuilt it in the garage -- a fun project. I listened to the engine run for 30+ minutes before it was pulled. No ticks, knocks, revved good, ran solid at 198 idle, no coolant usage.

The engine was sent off, pressure tested, all looked good. Rebuilt heads, new oil pump, bearings, crank, ARP studs... the works.

So now, I get the engine in the truck. Runs good, nice and cool, good oil pressure. No coolant usage, no misfires. After I broke it in, I took it for a test drive. I get back and there is a tick. More pronounced under the car than on top, more towards the back of the bay, on the left side.

It sounds like a sleeve. It goes away when I spray water on the bottom of the engine. And with a stethoscope, it definitely sounds like #5. Runs great otherwise, and tick is quite soft compared to others I've heard. Starts when the truck gets around 170 degrees. Goes away above 2500 rpm.

I don't know how, but it appears the sleeve was slipping the whole time and I missed it during the testing or it just went after I got it all rebuilt. Anyway, I'm wondering what y'all think, would you just leave it? pin it? or pull it? or is there something I'm missing. Looking for opinions?

Try a good oil change and see if theres any difference or check oil level first.

Oil level is right at the high mark. Does not seem to be loosing or burning oil. Has a nice color and smell to it. I was planning on changing the oil in a couple days since it is breaking-in and all.

Speak to the guys at Turner Engineering in the UK, they are decent and helpful guys with enormous knowledge of Rover V8 engines.

There are two ways to fix a slipped sleeve with your engine still in your Disco 2:

#1: http://www.landroverresource.com/doc...g_V8_Liner.pdf

#2: installing new Cometic head gaskets (covers sleeves) to replace OEM HGs (don't cover sleeves) https://landroverforums.com/forum/di...19/#post386380

Will do. Maybe they can shed some light on something I missed.

Ouch, well, I'll look into pinning the liner.

Did you replace the cam and lifters or reuse?

The cam and lifters were reused. They were in good condition.

Did you make sure they all went back on the same lobes on the cam? If one is off that could be your tick, as they tend to wear in.

Yes, I made sure they all went back in the same places. It doesn't seem to be top end.

Engine is running very good, besides the tick. The tick is not constant; it comes and goes.
