Default Reccomended Oil

Recommended Oil*

So I read the lubricant table for the Discovery II for NC temps should be about 10W/30. This is my first Discovery, so I wanted to get an idea from you all who have been around them for a while and figure out what is recommended and what works best. If you all would let me know what weight and if I should go synthetic I would appreciate it. Also looking to do the sea foam treatment so I am sure I will be on here again asking some questions (yes, I read the post about. I'm pretty OCD so I want to make sure it is done correctly). Thanks in advance.

Lots of posts on Oil. I believe 10w-40 is what LR recommends, and I use a zddp additive in 10w-40. Rotella 5w-40 or 15-40 have zddp, and Rpi Engineering in England use 20w-50. Alex mixes 5w-40 and 15w-40 Rotella, and I may give it a shot.

15w40 Rotella is what I use. I have used the Valvoline 10w40 High Mileage oil as well when Rotella prices went insane for a while. Now that they're back down to earth I'm back using 15w40 Rotella, and either the K&N HP3001 or Mobil1 M301 Oil Filter.

Gentlemen,
The information is very much appreciated. It has been a rough go so far and I don't want to make it any harder on myself so I am doing as much maintenance and preventative maintenance as possible.

Thank you.

One thing I would recommend is to get the RAVE Manual, and read through the systems you are addressing with each issue. The Engine Management system is actually quite tolerant in some ways, but with some things like aftermarket sensors they are very finicky. If you can swing it a very good scanner tool will pay you back quickly as well.

Take each job as a learning experience.

You can also use a Wix 51515 or Napa Gold 1515 (exact same filter). Nearly as good of a filter as the Mobile 1 for half the cost

Look up the Revised 60k Service I wrote up. Lots of info in it. For most people the Rotella mix is what I'd recommend, but it's climate dependent and I outline them there.

I’ve used the Wix before & it’s a good filter, but I’m a one stop shop guy and I can save $$ on the oil at walmart, and I just grab the K&N HP3001, Mobil1 M301, or if they’re totally out of those the Motorcraft FL1A. Whatever you do DO NOT buy a FRAM or AC Delco E Series filter!

I just bought another disco (04) had a busted trans housing. Had been sitting for a while. Got it running and it had the hot idle knock. They had been running 10/30 syn. I replaced the head gaskets and oil pump looked good at 110k miles. Pulled the pan and the copper was showing on the rod bearings. Oil light was coming on also at idle. New bearings still knocking and oil light. Switched to rotella 15w/40 and a quart of lucas for the hell of it and still knocking until it hit about 150 miles with the rotella in it. Silent now. Most likely lifter or rocker shaft. Installed mechanical oil pressure gauge inside vehicle 15 psi hot 45 at 1800 high way speed.

Seconded on the Fram and AC Delco. Both are junk. AC Delco has phased out their standard line now and all they make is the e series (recycled material) filters.
