regular gas?
Regular gas will produce more heat calories when burned.
The engine was calibrated by BMW/Rover to use Premium which burns slower.
My thinking - putting in regular will cause pre- detonation and head gasket failure eventually.
It would be interesting to hear all the people with head gasket failures - if they have been using regular gasoline or not.
If so - I think that saving .30 cents a gallon did not prove cost wise over the long run.
15000 miles a year is 1000 gallons of gas for a rover..
1000 * .30 is $300.
So you are saving maybe $300 a year on regular.
A head gasket job costs say $2,500
So, if you drive 8 years on regular and then your head gaskets go - then you have saved $2,500 to replace the head gaskets.
Problem is - you spent the money elsewhere and did not save it.
So, you can't now afford to get the head gaskets fixed.

Head gaskets are 200$
Yes head gaskets cost around $150-200 give or take, and if you have the tech experience and all the tools and a garage space then a full head job might only cost you $250 total (HD kit, new hardware, lubes, misc) BUT alot of us DONT have any of that and most shops charge an upward of $1,500-2,500 (this usually includes boreing, sanding, polishing, replacing hardware, compression testing and HD replacement).
that explains why you're so much more wealthy then everybody else. both bands have best selling albums on iTunes Top 10 lists for 36 weeks straight I'm sure.
you shouldn't encourage people to do head gaskets without using new head bolts. in case you didn't know those bolts are 1 time use. $170 for the composite head gasket kit plus $70 for head bolts, $240.
