Default Replacing '03D2 Motor - 4.0 RR or Refurb 4.6?

My indie guy in Portland indicating my 90k mile 4.0L is done. Isn't overheating but is consistently misfiring and five of the three amigos are ablaze. Had hgaskets done in '09@60k. Codes (I dont have them) suggest a cracked block or something to do with the liner. He's suggesting:
- replace with a '01 RR 4.0 $5500 all in.
- replace w/a 3rd party refurb 4.6 (3yr warranty) $8500 all in.
- be his guinea pig on a td5 diesel w/a slug of other items for the conversion $10k.

Curious if these cost numbers and suggested solutions seem reasonable. Did a couple searches on this forum and i think the most common phrase across the threads that applied to my current motor is "would be good as a boat anchor" and "would make a nice coffee table in the man cave"
Trying to decide between these options or just saying F it and blowing my load on an LR4.

Its been an 8yr love/hate affair with her. 2003 Buckingham Blue HSE, 2" OME, ARB bumper/guard, ladder, rack, passenger step (for the other lady in my life).

Get an LR3.
If you can afford an LR4 then get it.
Don't put money down the toilet.

10k is probably a good deal for a td5, if he does everything, and it isn't some hack job.

I don't know about misfires alone being justification for a cracked block diagnosis. Can you see if you can get us the codes?

Just curious, there must be a story why your 03 has a 4.0 in it...

Lots of auto auctions. And it's a decent sized city. I figured the op was from OK, so it's close too.

I would highly suggest the TD5 for $10k, that's a great deal if done right. The fuel mileage alone would have you breaking even in 200,000 miles!

Hmmm. If your mechanic thinks your 2003 D2 has a 4.0 in it, then he isn't the guy to handle a diesel conversion. Your truck came with a 4.6 in it. Unless it wasted the original motor (very possible in an 03) and someone replaced it with a 4.0.

If you're going to consider a diesel conversion, be prepared to be without your truck for a long time, be ready to look at a check engine light on the dash (unless it's taped over), and be prepared to choose where you live based on how they perform vehicle inspections. The change will make your vehicle illegal so anywhere that looks under the hood or plugs into the OBD port will fail you.
