Default Replacing alternator Disco I

Okay,
Going to replace the alternator. Any tricks, tips or pitfalls I should know about? By looking at it, it looks pretty straight forward. My battery is toast. The 16 volts from the alternator must have fried it (only a month old too). I put another battery in and it started but it sounds like the starter is not disengaging. It sounds good in gear but nuetral or park it makes a awful sound from the ring gear area. Battery light is still on and acid is bubbling from the battery so I shut it off and disconnected the battery. Don't want to fry another. Question: if alternator is pushing too many volts would that affect the starter? Just want to know if I developed yet another problem.
Thanks for the help
Bob

Okay all done, wasn't too bad. I just need to tighten the idler pulley. I'll do that tomorrow in daylight. It's getting tough to see out there now.

Tighten the idle pully? Did you take the pully off? You know that you can put a wrench on the pully nut and release the tensioner right?
Yes a alt putting out to much power will fry the battery, I do not know about the starter thing though.

Yes Spike,
I was trying to figure out how to lower the idler and turned the centerbolt a few times to "loosen" it. When I realized that wasn't doing anything except loosening the pulley itself I figured out the whole bracket is on like a spring loaded deal. So I worked it down with a pry bar and got the belt on but now I gotta tighten that bolt back up. Not an easy task in between the fan blades in the dark. I should finish it tomorrow and let you know how I made out. I'm beginning to think the ring gear noise has nothing to do with it, just coincidence that it started today. Will investigate that noise after everything is buttoned up.

That spring loaded deal is your belt tensioner Bob. There is a spot on the fan where the blades are farther apart and a socket with a short extension fits in there nicely.
Let me know how it works out, I know its hard to do stuff in the dark, you can use a light but with shadows and all...
