Question Replacing flex plate/flywheel on 04' Disco. have questions

I am starting a new thread since the problem has been pinpointed.. Now I'm taking apart the undercarriage and ready to drop the trans and bell housing soon.. If you find my most recent thread started, it will give you details of what has been going on.... he we go

It's a 2004 Disco S model, 4.6l with the ZF24 automatic trans and locking difs..

I am looking into replacement parts and I quickly found on Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market (awesome site!). that they are by weights apparently? 10gm or 8gm. Is this true, and if so, what weights came with which Engine/Trans setup??

Also, is there a flex plate, a flywheel, and the torque converter??

They seem like pretty cheap parts to replace so want to make sure I have the right parts..

Thanks guys!

Best to take it apart and access the damage.
Flex plate bolts to the crank.
Torque converter bolts to the flex plate.
Pretty much standard setup.

IN your case, you probably do not need to unbolt the flex plate as it looks destroyed.

Take lots of pictures and post them here. Interested in seeing how big a job dropping the trans is. Thanks!

also you may want to check with Paul Grant this question of weight came up before, he may know the answer and probably has the parts cheaper than Car parts.com. I big problem with CP.com is that is what we adjuster use to get part some the item disappear rapidly because every insurance company in the country is pulling for there.

Just curious, why do you think you need to replace the flex-plate.
If you are going in there, don't forget to replace the engines rear main seal and the front tranny seal.

I ran into a similar situation when helping a customer replace the crank pulley. He had noticed there were several different weights, 10gn, 15gm, 20gm, ect. On eBay he saw people selling 10gm pulleys, 15 gm pulleys, ect. It turned out that there was only one pulley for all models. However, there is a small weight on the pulley. Something like the wheel weights you see on balanced wheels.

It's my suspicion that is what the different weights refer to. If you have your flex plate out, take a look at is and see if you see any kind of weight mounted on it. It will likely have it's weight in gms. stamped on it. Hence the 10 gm, 15 gm flex plate.

I wonder if it's exactly like that. In other words, I wonder if it doesn't matter, so long as it's balanced. The catalog doesn't show different part numbers or different weights, so I'm guessing balanced is balanced, whether it took 10gm or 15 to get there.

my guess would be that weight would counteract any crank shaft imbalance.
But, I would think that a crank is already balanced perfectly.
But, what do I know.
I don't make cranks.

Probably the crank was not balanced perfectly at the factory

yes; you need to match the flywheel weight to the harmonic balancer weight, if not your lower end will vibrate apart

Examine the part and get the number off the existing weight, it's the only way to know. My crankshaft pulley up front has a 5g weight, I just snapped a picture with my iphone:
