I'm looking at adding a roof rack to my '03 Discovery. There seem to be two main players: Baja Racks and Front Runner. The Baja Rack has an old school look that (I feel) matches the old school looks of the D2, but I'm curious what the pros and cons of each rack system are from folks who have done a similar comparison.
Obviously both can carry loads up top, though it seems like doing so with the Front Runner may also require a lot of FR accessories.
I had a baja rack on my LR3 for a couple years and it is a solid rack with a good look to it. The problem I had was with my roof top tent, and spare. I had no flexibility really on where the tent had to go due to the way the Baja was laid out. Then with the way it was laid out my spare tire had to go in the front and hung over the front of the rack by a couple inches with a 32.
The Front Runner is a bit more versatile. The eyelets you can add and adjust in the rails is very handy. Also it’s flat so you have the ability to really try things in different spots until you find that just right fit.
I admit I didn’t really give it much thought in the beginning but as I used it more and more I found the flaws to be to much plus the rack was needing to be freshened up. So I sold it and bought a Pro-Speed which is like the front runner in the flat surface, but not quite as flexible.
Baja rack sucks. It's too low. Too expensive. Made in Mexico. And says "BAJA" on it.
I know a guy that makes a near perfect duplicates of the Rovers North and Safari systems rack's .. EXCEPT BETTER !!!! Super high quality ! Excellent craftsmanship ! and it's s MADE IN THE USA ! ! And it's cheaper !!! AND he's got 3 models to chose from ! Low profile .. high profile .. and ultimate ...
It blows all these other racks out of the water ! ! ! ! !
Voyager ,, that's what I was going to say .. high quality racks .. they don't have those bars on the sides like the photo above .. I would like those ..
Has anyone found a good method to put skis on the rood? Would you guys recommend a roof box or the clamp style rack?
Guessing the flat front runner with the eyelets would be more accommodating?
