Roof rack preference - Completely flat or with the middle "ramp"??
I've been kicking around the idea of getting a roof rack since I took a look at the Hannibal stolenheron has on his rig. I have to say Hannibal would be my first choice, but @ $1600 plus shipping for a new unit, it is a little steep. Roverracks is just a little north of here so it would be super easy to pick up a Voyager with no shipping costs - a great value to begin with so that would be icing on the cake.
So my question for those of you with racks - is there a big benefit of the completely flat rack like the Hannibal or Wilderness models versus the two-level design of the SD and Voyager models?
I assume a flat floor would accomodate full sheets of plywood better if that was a concern, but are there any other considerations I should be thinking of in these two ramp designs?
I'm currently leaning toward the Voyager due to value and convenience, but I like the idea of the Hannibal for a possibly more stable platform to use as a high vantage point for wildlife photography.
Thanks for the input.
Regards,
Bill

I prefer the two-level design as far as looks but I've never owned one. The single level racks might be more practical for carrying gear. I'm sure somebody on here can give you some feedback on that.
I have the SD high rack on my '03 D2 which I am sure you know is a two level style. I have to say the "flat" style racks are easier to move around on, sit chairs up there, Etc. I have a flat style on my other rig. I installed flooring the other day and it would have been much easier if the rack was one level also.
But I think a rack like mine actually puts you a little higher up in the air if that's what your looking for, for your photography. And as far as looks go I would say the two level looks a little better and seems to flow with the lines of the truck better.
Take your time, get some more input here, and weight your options. Good Luck...

Yeah, I really like that rack as too, Ed. It's nice that roverracks is only about 30 minutes from here... temptation is knocking hard. I just want to make sure I get enough rack, but not too much.
They make a nice 1/2 rack as well that is about the same price as an ARB unit when you take into account the additional mounting accessories needed with the ARB unit... Hmmm...
Guess I just need to drive up there and browse a little.
Anyone else with some rack input?
