Default Roof rack question

Are there any less expensive roof racks that do not require cross bars and can be installed with just the stock roof rails?

thanks,

Chris

Default RE: Roof rack question

I have a 2004 Disco and I went with the hitch mounted variety because the roof racks make the vehicle to tall for my parking garage at home or work. The hitch mounted variety are also cheaper and easier to remove in my opinion. I have a Yakima Kingpin 4 with the Ski Hitch attachment if that helps.

To answer your question, the vehicle is too wide to attach most roof racks with the use of cross bars, and the factory OEM cross bars are more expensive than the Thule or Yakima models if I remember correctly.

You will have a hard time finding one, I have looked and found nothing. Its seems everything needs cross bars or a mounting kit, and those jack the price up evern more. I have been looking in to 50X50 roof rack on Atlantic british but the mounting kit is almost as much as the rack itself. Let me know what you find. I'll shout if I find something too.

I have a Yakima load warrior that clips directly to the roof rack but you still need cross bars. I got mine at a swap meet for 200 bucks. I have already ripped my rack and bike of the truck so I'm looking for a better method than just those clips on the luggage rack, but am having trouble getting straight answers from the people at Yakima as to what gutter clips will fit. If amyone knows a solution it would help.

What do you want to use the roof rack for? Off-roading? Travel? Have you thought about a small trailer?
