Roof rack rails
Sorry for the tread jack but a sort of related question...what is the max load on the outer mounts that after market roof racks bolt to (The rail that wraps the truck). I see people load their roofs with tents and tons of gear inside huge heavy but what is the max?
It is 110 pounds on road, 60 pounds offroad, converted from kilos (in RAVE).
I think those figures are related to center of gravity, not real carrying capacity.
I carried three times that on my old BMW with similar attachments (yakima). And I have seen rovers with two tires and gas on top, plus what loooked like lighter stuff. I read somewhere that when you get over 250 pounds on top it gets rolly.

Its far easier for kayak haulin to not use cross rails, and use a nice heavy duty nylon roll up mat on the roof, leaving a few inches overhanging the rear. I put the tip of my 14.5' sailing kayak on the back, then slide it all the way forward so about 3 feet overhangs the windshield, then use w racheting straps, one circled around the front of the kayak, one circled around the rear of the kayak and attached the rear ladder... rachet down and ive done 80 sustained on the parkway without it so much as shifting in place. plus the mat keeps all the sand and rocks from scraping the hood for the ride home after a good run!
the bars are so far forward that putting a kayak up on crossbars you still need something to cover the rear edge so the roof doesnt get scraped up, plus it adds a few inches of height, and the weight is on the bars, and not the roof, makes a nice torque angly for wind to lift up those two weak rail bolts. plus, no wind whistle when not in use!
