The Mobile1 is a good filter, but some others have a better valve inside. The price of the Mobile1 makes some guys try to get more miles out of it, and that is where the problems arise. In the days when this engine block was a new design (late 1950's) oil was changed at 1000 - 3000 miles. Not 15,000. Back then you traded the car at 15,000.....

I generally change mine more often than recommended just because I am compulsive about my hobby. But for anyone reading this after searching for Rotella comments as I did, and in light of the comments above, I will be sticking with the Rotella for my hot, southern location. I'm looking into a jumbo filter based on recommendations. It is difficult to figure out which filter has the best valve and filtration, and find or order it so it is on hand when I need it. However, it does make sense to find the right one and order a few just like I do with the oil.

I have a very old mercedes diesel (1983) that takes the same oil and the oil is literally black within a hundred miles of a change. I am assured that is normal. It is nice to see the Rotella turn black quickly the first few times you use it in a gas engine, then stay relatively clear after. Means it is doing something, IMHO.

Thanks again for the comments.

I am moving away from Rotella after my first 5k with it, wasn't very satisfied. I was much happier with the engine with the amsoil, to each their own!

Isn't this like saying, "I wasn't satisfied with my civic. I'm much happier with the Ferrari!"

Thanks for the insight Mr. Moneybags

Haha well I wasn't aware the quality was that much lower, a bunch of people were running it on here so I thought there was something to it.

I may not know any better... I'm curious what you didn't like about it.

The engine never idled as smooth as it did with the Amsoil, and it never sounded as "good". Placebo effect maybe, just wasn't that happy.
