Default RPM Gauge problems

I just installed a new alternator but now my rpm guage wants to flucate randomly. Sometimes its fine..other times it drops to zero then pops back up. Had the battery andalternator checked out..they were both ok. Checked the belt routing..it looks right. Any ideas?

Sounds like a loose wire on the back of the alternator.
