The rubber fender trim (front and rear) on my 2004 Disco is starting to look pretty shabby! Is this normal? If I replace them will the new ones do the same thing? Is there a dressing that will help make them look better that you guys have used?

 

I am thinking of painting mine with some matte black krylon or if you have a paint gun use a matte black paint with plasticizer added.

 

I've heard from a few members on this forum that Forever Black (I think that's what it was called) works.

 

I painted mine about 2 months ago with paint made for plastic and they look great.
I didn't sand them well the first time, so I ended up doing it twice. So if you do go with the paint route, learn from my mistake and sand them well or you wont like the outcome. Also, do multiple layers, and be sure each layer is very thin. I did about 8.

IMO, at least try and paint them before buying new ones. Also, the "back to Black" type stuff works for a while and does a fairly good job, but it wears off after a few washes or rains. If you have really rough trim, the stuff wont work, thats why i painted mine.

You can get custom mixed spray cans or harbor freight has some budget sprayers that work well, you need a compressor obviously.

 

No. I just used the sprayer that came on on the spray can. Turned out great, but it wasn't the typical sprayer you would see on a spray paint can, it sprayed more even, almost like a compressor would.

Here are the materials I used. Costed about $15 bucks. You can decide if you want flat or satin. I liked satin because it matched the rest of the plastic better (at least thats the case for the rustoleum brand.

 

I tied Back to Black, results were poor.
Used Kiwi Black shoe polish with the foam applicator.
Worked great, especially on the bumpers.
Lasts about 6 months.

 

I tried all that greasy temporary stuff that didn't last so I painted mine with Honda Flat Black Bumper Paint. Turned out very nice but did take some time to sand and mask off but well worth it. But as mentioned earlier, sanding is the key or you will do the job twice...as I learned on driver side, lol...

 

Krylon Fusion for plastic has incredible antifade properties. I sprayed my Jeep fenders with this product and after 2 years of direct Arizona sunlight it was the only black on my Jeep that had not faded. You will not be disappointed.
