Edit:

had an issue where I changed my power steering fluid and I suddenly got a lot of slop and looseness in the steering wheel, adjustment screw did nothing. Also while turning you could hear / feel clunking and popping in the steering shaft. Before that the steering would bind when turning left or right. figured it was my lower steering column so I replaced that. It didn’t do anything.

any case, I ended up getting a used power steering box from a donor car. Replacement was actually surprisingly really easy.

fixed all of my power steering problems. Drives great now. I put pentosin ch11s or what ever and it’s running really good and quiet.

Before replacing, follow the power steering flush. These rovers require pentosin I think. https://landroverforums.com/forum/di...sco-2-a-82162/

I’ve read quite a few threads on several forums and there doesn’t seem to be a good consensus on the type of fluid to use. I semi flushed mine with the CHF 11S shortly after I got the vehicle. I’m now looking at rebuilding my PS Pump and am a little loathe to spending the money on the Pentosin over regular PS Fluid. What are the current thoughts on fluid type? I’m happy to spend the money on the right fluid but not if there really isn’t a good reason to.

I've never had a problem just using ATF. I've run it in all my rigs for years, including the Disco.

Hell, I'm not saying this is the right way, but I've even topped them off with some 15w40 in a pinch. Actually has helped when I've had a pump start making a little noise. Thickens the fluid up a bit.

The PS system is a simple hydraulic system. There's nothing complicated, no need to overthink it in my experience.

All that said, if you have a hard spot where you can physically feel it get stuck then it's time for a new steering box. I replaced one on a customer vehicle just a couple months ago for the same reason, though theirs was damaged by a front end collision.

Thanks Alex. I’ve suspected as much about the PA fluid type.

Got a refurb steering box coming in today from autohasz. Will let you know how it turns out after I get it installed. This will be my 4th replacement!

Well the install went without a hitch. No leaks and seems to be functioning properly. I still need to do some minor adjustments and align the steering wheel a bit better. Whole job took about 2 hours (it’s easy when you have done this 4 times already!). You guys convinced me that pentosin is not required so I just purchased regular Lucas power steering fluid. We’ll see how it goes.

Just following up here. New box seems to be doing fine after I adjusted it a bit. The Lucas power steering fluid did not perform well in my opinion - vague/delayed steering. I dumped it today and went back to Pentosin. For me there was a night and day difference between the two fluids.
