Scouting 2 Discovery's - Need Thoughts
You should look for one that comes up for sale from a member here. even if you have to make a 2,000 mile trip to get the right one. If you start reading through here at all the problems and issues you could be faced with, you begin to understand the time and money involved with maintaining a somewhat "reliable" Discovery. I hope you give yourself a fighting chance at the best possible start. Good luck on your search and be wary. Be very wary.
I'd call all my Land Rover's reliable to be honest. Sure they "can" have issues if not properly maintained/fixed correctly or addressed. I've owned to many LR's to count honestly now and not a single one of them has ever left me stranded on the side of the road.
Used ones on CL can be a diamond in the rough, a complete disaster, a flood vehicle, or one that was maintained perfectly, but the owner needs something else due a growing family or they're moving and aren't taking it with them.
I've done better with CL Land Rover's (knowing exactly what to look for) vs the shady small car lots. I looked at a D1 at a small used car lot that looked great from 20ft away, but upon closer inspection it was leaking fluids from everywhere, the gauge cluster had bulbs pulled out, frame was spray painted black to cover up the rust, and it was way over-priced and they wouldn't budge on the price. I didn't even bother to test drive it.
As long as you know exactly what you're looking for I'd avoid dealerships all together and buy it strictly from an individual. Maintenance records are great, but aren't a deal breaker for me.
