Default Sea foam

Hi,

Bought my Disco II 2003 160k an xmas present: a can of Sea Foam!

Any tips on application would be greatly appreciated?

The guy in the shop told me to put it in anywhere.......ANYWHERE! he said. I have come to learn that my Disco II needs to be treated with care to avoid additional $$$$'s spent so i would like to avoid upsetting any parts of the engine which are currently ok!

Cheers

J

Some people put it in the gas tank, some put it in the oil a little bit before they change the oil, some use it for an induction cleaning, look up the the process.

You can let some of it get sucked into a vac line that goes to the intake, maybe 5 ounces or so, not the whole can. Then run truck outside. This is an important step. The cloud produced will kill skeeterz in the summer for quite some distance. You can pour into the gas tank, it will do some injector cleaning. You can pour into oil, it will act as a solvent and clean off some crud.

Note on the intake cleaning - I did SWMBO's van, and pulled out on the road by my house. The cloud was so thick that the pickup truck behind me turned on his headlights.

Did the intake clean on mine and the 02 sensors went out right after. Have done it on other vehicles prior and this didn't happen. Not sure if this was the cause but it may be enough to make 02 sensors that are near failure to go full failure. Just my experience with it.

Seafoam is a pretty good product, but by your mileage, you have a ton of more important issues to deal with first. Go to the top of this section and read my major service and do it all. especially the front drive shaft.
SeaFoam is about the last in the process to use and as an induction cleaner only.
Want some help, send me your number and I'll call you.

I love the stuff, used to get it dirt cheap at work especially during promos, but alas its rather pricey nowadays... its pretty much just kerosene in a bottle

I put a can of it in the oil for a round trip to work before an oil change, no idea if it does anything...

Every few months if its cheap ill put a can and a half or so in the gas tank (think its only good for a 20 gallon per can max mix with gasoline) but usually end up putting whatever "injector cleaner/upper cylinder lube" is on sale that week... lucas, whatever.

I do love doing an "induction cleaning" which might help get some film crap out of the intake manifold and valves using a vac hose to suck a whole can (yep, a whole can) in, then let it sit for an hour or so (forgot once and left it in over night) and then drive around avoiding the local police and other traffic usually late a night as it does come out like a nightrider style smoke screne for a few minutes... not exagerating, dont do it in a populous place or on major roads. i'll do it then take a can of maf cleaner or whatever and pull off the intake tube and do some cleaning on the throttleblades, bypass motor, change the air cleaner etc. etc then wait till dark to scoot over to a local failed housing development dead end where there are no cars/houses to **** of and drive around a bit. till it burns off.

ive done it maybe a half dozen so or times over the years on my disco with no ill effect, as well as my motorcycle and 2 previous cars and never had a sensor problem resulting in the smoke, however i can see in theory how it might bugger up an o2 thats already on its way out? its pretty much the equivalent of an oil leak in the cylinders, the smoke is the seafoam liquid and whatever it stripped in the intake valleys and off from behind the valves burning up in teh cylinder... makes it like a 2 stroke

edit ps: just saw your year and miliage... yeeesh whoever got you that present must really not like you!! hahaha seriously though, you have a lot of things to look at long before even a basic tune up is in order, hope you have work records for its history! could be a gem or an absolute nuggest of ****!!

I know that this thread has been done to death, but wanted to put in my two cents. 3/16 in hose, 2 cans seafoam, pair of pliers, maf cleaner, and throttle body cleaner. used whole bottle of seafoam, let it sit for 1/2 hour. i know bottle says 5 minutes, but have used this product for other cars. and yes, if you have never used this product before, it smokes. ALOT!!!!! was pulled over by cops because other drivers were worried. when i told them what i was doing, one of the officers laughed and said the smoke did look familiar. at least i didn't get a ticket. and, found out i have an exhaust leak from all the smoke. driveshafts next on list.

I just did the induction cleaning and throttle body cleaning today. It is so easy, just follow the instructions in the "write ups" post. I did it on my own, and had no problem just holding the tube at the top of the seafoam to control the flow rate. After a half hour, I started it up and it smoked like crazy, smoke was done after 15 minutes of driving. I did not get any codes. It does seem to accelerate better.
BTW put another can in the fuel tank.
