Default Series II with 18's. Max Tire Size?

Before I get slammed for asking this question I want to make the following clear:

1. I did search this site for info on the subject but all I could find were the standard 16" rim swaps. I have nothing against 16" rims on your truck, I do not want them on mine.

2. I do not take my Discovery off road very often only during hunting season and the occasional country drive so articulation and approach angles are really not a priority.

3. I simply want my truck to look a little better.

4. I AM an idiot.

I have the 18" rims and they currently have 255/55. These things look awful and I want to get a larger more aggressive looking tire but I DO NOT want to buy 16" steel rims. By my calculations a 255/55 r18 is 29" in diameter with a 5.5 " side wall. I am looking at the Kumho Road Venture AT KL7 BUT the only size I can find is 275/65 r18. I calculate this size to be 32.1" in diameter with a 7" side wall. Is there any possible way I can stuff 3 more inches of rubber under this thing with out a lift !??? What is my max tire size with 18" rims??

I can't answer how much more tire you can stuff under there without a lift, but as far as your "max tire size" with 18" rims, its whatever you can find to put on there.

I had 35s on 16.5" rims. I used to wheel with someone who had 44s on 16s. Yes - that was way before 18s were common.

The problem you'll have is the the more sidewall, the more wander/squirm you'll feel on the road, as well as the worse your "turn in" is going to be (laggy steering wheel input).

I can tell you that 35s were no problem for any of that on 16.5 wheels. So you ought to be just fine on 18s.

You will need at least a 2" lift, steering stop adjustments and maybe a little metal trimming on the rear fenders.

ok so the 275/65 's will not fit without modification. What is the max tire size I can run WITHOUT modification?? I guess I was not clear on that point.

In a 18", I can't say cause I have had about one weeks experience on 18's before I got rid of them.

285/60 r18. About 31.5". May rub a little if you fully clock the steering wheel.

If you dont use it offroad much, why go so wide as a 285........I think they will rub the radius arms well before full lock.

I'm like you, I use the rover on-road for most things as of now. But I go off roading every once in a while (wish I could more...) and I need to have the tires to preform in both conditions. Dont mess with what might work. I run 255/60 r18 will no rubbing. They look great, there is no rubbing, and the fill out the wheel area better than the 255/55. I run General Grabber A/t2 and they preform great on road and great off road. Very little hum, great looking tread, and quality tire. I would say go with 255/60 (in whatever tire you choose) and you can be positive you wont have problems.

Not sure. That size was on the rover when I got a few years ago. Biggest size tire (width & height) I have seen on a stock rover.

So the tallest size is around 31.5" and the widest is about 285. I am pretty sure they rub a bit being that wide.
