Got a 1999 Series II with a moody air conditioning system. No matter how low you set the temperature the air conditioning does not want to come on. drive it around that way for a while (sometimes 5 min and sometimes 30 min or more) and suddenly the air conditioner will kick on and blow ice cold! Turn the Rover off and back on and the story repeats itself.

Upon further inspection I noticed that the compressor is not kicking on. The refrigerant level is where it is supposed to be and there are no leaks. So does anyone have any idea what would keep the compressor from kicking on? Is there a hi/lo refrigerant sensor?

Any help would be appreciated.

Maybe one of your temp sensors are faulty?

 

I don't think it is the temp sensor because the system works perfectly for heat and the blower changes speed like it is supposed to. And with the temp on the "LO" position should the temp sensor not be taken out of the loop?

True. The only other easy thing is the freon level and you said that was fine. Maybe the condenser clutch.

 

Play with the plug-in under the hood at the compressor. wires sometime get loose within the plug-in itself.

 

How do you know the freon level is OK?
If you jump the compresor, will it start and is it stone cold?

 

My friend is an Auto tech. We took it to his shop and he had a machine that pulled out checked and refilled and the amount was as required by sticker under hood. It does not have rear A/C so its the smaller amount.

How do you jump the compressor?

With a wire from the positive side of the battery to the hot wire on the compressor, if the compressor fire right up then I would look at the pressure switch as a possible issue.
