Service Engine Soon MAF and O2 sensor
My 2003 has a Service Engine Soon light coming on periodically for 30 miles or so and then apparently fixing itself, then coming on again around 50 miles later. It runs kind of rough for a while at idle when the light comes on, then runs smoother over time until the light goes off. This has happened twice in the past few days and then it happened again today and is still on. I took it to Auto Zone who said there is a MAF sensor and O2 sensor code, as well as a "dealer only" code. This all started after the truck sat still in airport parking for over a week while I was traveling out of state, but that may not have anything to do with it. I was thinking of trying to clean the MAF sensor as I've seen by searching the posts that it's pretty easy to do. I'm not a mechanic, but I do have a decent one who charges about 2/3 what the dealer charges (which is still a lot). Any other suggestions?
It has 73,000 miles and I have owned the truck since 68,000 miles (5 months). I don't know if O2 sensors have ever been replaced. Would that trigger a MAF sensor code along with the O2 code?
I would suggest you go get the codes read again, maybe from another store and this time get the fault code numbes and get back to us with them before you do anything to the truck. What ever you do, DO NOT CLEAN THE MAF, all you will do is screw up the Bosh MAF, they don't take to being cleaned.
Get back to us with the codes.
Good luck,
Mike

OK, I haven't cleaned the MAF yet. Thanks for that advice.
Here are the codes as read by Advance Auto Parts today:
P0130 O2 bank 1, sensor 1
P0171 System too lean, bank 1
P1171 Manufacturer control fuel air metering

1171 is also a fault code for both A and B O2 sensors.
Stay away from your MAF, there is no code indicating a problem them.
Looks like you are going to be the owner of 4 new O2's in the near future.

This is not that unusual. All 4 have probably not failed but they aren't working well together and this can sure screw up your trucks performance. Give me a shout if you want to get some good prices on new O2's.

OK Thanks Mike. I found the Bosch at Advance Auto Parts for about $78 each, while Atlantic British was less but not by much when you factor in shipping. Anyway, the light went back off yesterday. Should I have the codes cleared and see if it pops up again before I take the O2 sensor plunge or am I just asking for trouble by delaying? Also, is it recommended to change all 4 at the same time or should I change out a couple at a time to see if the condition improves?
