Default Service intervals for your Disco

This question was just asked and I never thought about it before but it is a good one to ask for someone who is a rookie and is willing to learn.
Always remember, the only stupid question is the one not asked.

Can somone post how often these check-ups are needed to be done for each item? ie: every 20K- Every oil change?

Depending on what type of oil you are using depends on how often it needs to be changed.
Engine oil and filter...
With conventional oil change it every 3,000 miles or every 6 months.
With full synthetic oil change it every 5,000 miles or 6 months.
Land Rover recommends changing the engine oil and filter every 7500 miles.
There is no way I would ever go that long, while it may be possible I cannot recommend it.

Transmission fluid...
Change the fluid every 30,000 miles and the filter every 60,000 miles.

Front, rear differentials and transfer case...
Using conventional gear lube change it every 30,000 miles.
Full synthetic gear lube change it every 50,000 miles.
If you wade in deep water check the fluid levels as soon as you can and change if you have water ingress.

Brake fluid...
Land Rover recommends every 24 months no matter what.

Engine coolant...
If you have a Discovery Series II then Land Rover recommends every 45,000 miles or 36 months, whichever is sooner.
If you have a Discovery Series I Land Rover recommends every 30,000 miles or 36 months, which ever is sooner.
I recommend every 24 months no matter the miles.

Air filter as needed, check its condition with every oil change.

Plugs and wires as needed.

All coolant hoses every 10 years.

Serpentine belt every 100,000 miles.

Fuel filter every 30,000 miles.
But to keep it simple if you replace it once a year it wont be all rusted up and impossible to remove.
This does not apply to a Discovery Series II.

Grease the u-joints and slip joints on your drive shafts every oil change, pump in fresh grease until new grease comes out of all four caps on each u-joint and starts to come out of the gator on the slip joint.

Power steering fluid, Land Rover has no recommendation on how often to change it, but I recommended every 24 months no matter the miles.

With proper preventative maintenance any car or truck will last a very long time with very few breaks downs.

Thank you Spike,

I am going to print this off and put it in my Disco folder.

Do you think power steering fluid should be added to this? Remember "no question is a dumb question" so don't get mad at me - lol.

really thanks for putting this up.

After the first filter change on a transmission, I wouldn't touch it again. The clutches are broken in and shouldn't be throwing much else off, if you keep your fluid changed. I think this is just added cost, and more chance to mess something up.. I have 180K and she is still kicking strong with only one filter change.

U-joints?

Serisouly I was ask"when do I change the air in the tires?"

Lube cables once a year. (nothing worse than broken throttle cable)
Lube door locks and hindges once a year.
Clean battery terminals once a year.
Lube CDL rods once a year.
WD-40 rubber motor, frame .body etc mounts.

I was half way to the concert that I was doing security for when I remembered that I forgot to add in u-joints.
They need to be lubed EVERY oil change, pump in fresh grease until it comes out of all four caps.

As far as the trans filter, change it every 60k, it is a old wives tale that doing anything to a auto trans after it has "X" miles on it.
The filter is $35, if you set aside $2.16 every time you change your oil in 60k you will have enough saved to buy the filter.
If we used that logic then why change the engine oil filter?
Each to his own, but I think that shows how durable the ZF trans is.

Power steering fluid, change it every 24 months no matter the miles.
Land Rover does not have a service interval for power steering fluid, most manufactures dont.

I think 7500 mile OCI's are doable if you use a HDEO (heavy duty engine oil) like shell rotella or a synthetic with real high levels of ZDDP like mobil 1 15W-50, amsoil, redline etc. I am going to get some used oil analysis done on my current fill to see how long you can actually safely go in these engines with a stout oil. I will post the results here at around 5000, 6000, 7000 miles. I currently have 4 quarts of rotella 5w-40 and 2 quarts of mobil 1 15w-50 (I had a couple quarts left over) and a napa gold filter.

For those using a regular synthetic or dino (or who just want to play it safe) stick with 5000/3000 mile OCI's that spike recommends.

I am really wanting to know how your SOS comes back.
SO please do post when you get it done.
Also include the company's name and a web address too when you do it if you can.

Sure will do, I have ordered some UOA kits from Blackstone labs. I will post the pdfs when I get up in the mileage and send in the samples. I just want to see for myself. I have a couple thousand miles to go before I start with the testing.

Here is the lab's website anyone can send in used oil for analysis. They test for things like total bases and metals (both wear metals and additives) and tell you if you oil is still OK to use.

my habit when doing things on my vehicles go as such,,,

when i change oil on my motorcycle, ferrari, rover,

and the oil is draining i clean everything under the bonnet. spray everything with degreaser, lube all cables and working parts like linkages, latches, etc.

i spray wd40 on electrical connections and wipe everything down.

which is why after time you can lift the hood on any of my rigs or under the fairings of my my bike they look good as new.
