Service intervals for your Disco
i off road the rig all the time.
then i just clean it all up. i am **** when it comes to working parts of vehicles. bodywork and paint is easy to repair and fix.
working parts cost way more and wear out faster if not cared for.
plus i like to clean
This question was just asked and I never thought about it before but it is a good one to ask for someone who is a rookie and is willing to learn.
Always remember, the only stupid question is the one not asked.
Can somone post how often these check-ups are needed to be done for each item? ie: every 20K- Every oil change?
Depending on what type of oil you are using depends on how often it needs to be changed.
Engine oil and filter...
With conventional oil change it every 3,000 miles or every 6 months.
With full synthetic oil change it every 5,000 miles or 6 months.
Land Rover recommends changing the engine oil and filter every 7500 miles.
There is no way I would ever go that long, while it may be possible I cannot recommend it.
Transmission fluid...
Change the fluid every 30,000 miles and the filter every 60,000 miles.
Front, rear differentials and transfer case...
Using conventional gear lube change it every 30,000 miles.
Full synthetic gear lube change it every 50,000 miles.
If you wade in deep water check the fluid levels as soon as you can and change if you have water ingress.
Brake fluid...
Land Rover recommends every 24 months no matter what.
Engine coolant...
If you have a Discovery Series II then Land Rover recommends every 45,000 miles or 36 months, whichever is sooner.
If you have a Discovery Series I Land Rover recommends every 30,000 miles or 36 months, which ever is sooner.
I recommend every 24 months no matter the miles.
Air filter as needed, check its condition with every oil change.
Plugs and wires as needed.
All coolant hoses every 10 years.
Serpentine belt every 100,000 miles.
Fuel filter every 30,000 miles.
But to keep it simple if you replace it once a year it wont be all rusted up and impossible to remove.
This does not apply to a Discovery Series II.
Grease the u-joints and slip joints on your drive shafts every oil change, pump in fresh grease until new grease comes out of all four caps on each u-joint and starts to come out of the gator on the slip joint.
Power steering fluid, Land Rover has no recommendation on how often to change it, but I recommended every 24 months no matter the miles.
With proper preventative maintenance any car or truck will last a very long time with very few breaks downs.

Tranny fluid by the book is every 30,000 miles, but as they get older or if we wheel a lot every 20,000 is a better number.
As for the diffs and t/case, on D2's, they came from the factory with a synthetic and a recommendation for changes every 30,000 miles, I suggest more often for the diffs. is you do a lot of wheeling and water crossings, like every 20,000 miles.
On the serpentine belt, the factory says every 45,000 if they are running more then 1 crack per running inch.
Just a small point ref wading...........and the diff oils..........
There is a simple rule to follow / think about, the diff casing / axle is sealed, so "if" you have no oil leaks (externally) then no water will get in..........so no need to change the fluid any more regular than if you don't swim it.
So if you have a leak FIX it BEFORE wading, if you don't have a leak, go swim and be happy!!
