Personally, I partially drop the shaft pretty much every oil change and lube it. I drop the rear half so i can get to all the fittings, and then the front u-joint is easier to get to because the shaft can move around.

The rear half is pretty easy to drop, so it isn't that bad. The front is more of a PITA because I have to double wrench it, so I leave it attached.

Honestly, I figured most of us were following a similar lubrication/inspection schedule.
