share your mentality about mods
Guys, although I'd really like to keep on modifying my Discovery, I'm kind of reluctant to do so because of different reasons, the main one being the fact that since Land Rovers are quite rare and are looked at as luxury vehicles and people who like them, fell in love with them becauseof their looks and prestige of the make,I'm afraid that by cutting the front bumper, installing a snorkle and Rhino lining the lower part of the doors will only diminish the interest of potential buyers, if or when I decide to sell it..someday...maybe.
I didn't hesitate for one minute to go ahead with the coil conversion and 2 ' OMElift with 265/70-16 tires , when my SLS pump failed, but I personnally prefer the looks of it this way and so do all of the people I know. 29 inch tires were way too small for a vehicle this size anyway.
Did you guys consider the market impact when you modified your truck??? or did you just go ahead and did what you wanted, not caring about the fact that after putting that much money in it, it's worth less market wise than it did before the mods.Cause wether we like it or not, the more mods we have, the less people will be interested in the vehicle. I mean less than without the mods in a market that is very small to begin with.
Please share your thoughts, I'm asking for logical reasons to change my way of looking at things.
thanks,
darover

With the older Disco's, the people looking to buy them will probably want to mod them anyway. I say mods are a benefit, if done right. There is a 96 close to me for $2300. It is really rough,, but has an ARB bumper, 2"OME lift, TomWoods front driveshaft, and Safari Snorkel. I would pay $1500 for the truck, but it is well worth the price with all of the mods.
If you do it right, keep it clean, and take care of it, I say go for whatever you want. These things loose value so fast, just get it the way you want it and don't worry about re-sale....
PS, I never really noticed how many Discovery's there were out there until I got one. I see one out there every day....

I agree with okdiscoguy, most people who are in the market for older discos will like the mods and even with discoII's someone will love to see mods on the truck. You are right though about certain cases where people just want it as a daily driver, but if you ever want to sell it I think the mods would actaully be more helpful than not. I know of tons of people who are in the market for a disco thats ready to hit the trails. I would go for it. Besides, its your truck and if you put time and money into it and get it to how YOU like it, you may never want to sell it.
If you want to buy a good used SLS pump, let me know, I know where a couple of them are layin around.

I've found that you won't get your money back on your mods, but you probably won't limit your pool of SERIOUS buyers if you mod your rig. I'm speaking mostly with my Wranglers. The mods don't up the price but you'll usually find people that really want your rig because of those mods. Instead of having 12 semi-interested buyers, I always had 3 or 4 really motivated to buy my rig because of the mods.
I kick myself daily for not buying a 2002 DII with ARB bumper, sliders, lift, 16" wheels, snorkel, lockers.....it was the same price as my 2002 bone stock. I'm the type of guy that would have jumped at the chance to get $4000 worth of mods pre-installed for no extra price.
Mod away!

Well,my mentalityactually allowed me to sell my fully built TJ last July for a premium un-negociable price. But I had installed only the best components on the market( Teraflex susp.and the likes) but most of all, every single thing could be taken off and I still had all the original components brand new in boxes ( had been modified since new). So aside from the tires, a day in the garage would have allowed me to bring it back to stock.
But the things that interest me in the Disco, like snorkle and cutting the bumper, are irreversible. I personnally think that snorkles look cool, but I know for a fact, that I'm not gonna cross any creek or riverthat necessitate such a device. And the potential buyer down the line, might be interested if it wasn't for that thing that his wife thinks is absolutely rediculous looking!!! You know what I mean??? I want to, but am trying to use you guys to convince me to go ahead with such mods.
Keep up the good work, I'm coming around
And Mike, definitely not interested in putting back a pump that could fail again. I need my Disco as reliable as it can be. And to me, that meant getting rid of thatpotential failing component. Way too many things to go wrong on these systems and I definitely was not interested in chasing air leaks.
thanks anyway.
