Shell Rotella T6 question
The great oil debate.
I run the T6. And at the end of the day, it's whatever you feel comfortable with. For a long time I ran T5 15W40 Rotella, but I didn't like the way the motor sounded in colder weather. Then I ran Mobil 1 0-40 (Mercedes Oil) and the I noted higher temps. (Noted with other users as well)
Does my truck leak, Yup.
Do I have to add oil between oil changes at 3000k oil changes - No.
Do I care that is leaking - not particularly. Keeps the rust away.
Will your results vary - Yes.

Right now I have Quaker State 10w-30 and the engine sounds great. I checked my temp for the first time today using my OBD II gauge. Average 210-212F with heater on, and 215F without. I do think I want to up the weight for sure.
I highly doubt that 10w30 has enough zinc. You've pretty much always got to go over a 40 weight to get enough for the old school flat tappet cam.
Also, Quaker is some of the worst oil on the market. I've never seen an engine sludge up so quickly as I have with religious 4000 mile oil changes using Quaker. 75k miles on the engine with nothing but Quaker after the first change by the owner and the sludge was caked all over the place.

Seconded on Quaker State being awful.
I use Rotella T6 in the winter here in NYC, and Rotella T5 for the rest of the year. Non-diesel oils aren't going to have enough of the Zinc additive ZDDP to make me confortable, which is why I stick to Rotella.

Wifey picking up 2 gals of Rotella T5 15w-40 and a Mobil1 M1-204 filter today. Going to change oil tomorrow, along with new coils, Kingsborne 8mm wires and plenum gasket.
I love playing with my toys. :-) I just get very very sad when they break.

I've read Rotella T6 is the oil of choice for the Disco. I just looked it up and see it's synthetic. That threw a big red flag for me.
I'm 45 years old and have never used synthetic because of two reasons: 1) I never had a car come with it in it new. 2) In the past I was told NEVER put synthetic in an older car because the oil seals were not made for it and it will leak like a sieve. In other words, only use synthetic in cars that came with it from the factory, or recent year cars with seals made for synthetic.
Now, let's say I buy a 2 year old car made for synthetic, sure I'd do it. Ask me about my 2002 Disco and I would surely think this is an "older" truck with seals designed for old school oil and not synthetic.
Obviously people are using synthetic in these "older" trucks so please educate me.
Thanks!

Guys, thanks for all the input. What started my thread was up top, in the sticky section under major service was this line:
6 Qts. of engine oil, Shell Rotella T-6
That lead me to believe that Shell Rotella T-6 was the "officially accepted oil of choice".
I understand now about options, but up there in that sticky, it looks like the word of God. :-)

I have used Mobil 1 in my other cars and it worked good enough, but it ain't cheap!! I prefer to stick to Dino oil on my Disco. I added a quart of 5w20 by mistake and when it is cold out, say below zero, I see the oil light for a bit until the oil gets moving. Planning on changing out to 15w-50 or so soon.
If you have any experience in opening these engines then you would see why Rotella (or any diesel engine oil) is recommended. Don't get baited in to the whole Syn / Dino debate, for it is not about any of that. It is about the buildup of black, sticky gunk, carbon, or whatever you want to call it, is incredible. I ran T6 for in my truck even in the south(Tennessee), because it was rated to do so(technology for you). After you run Rotella for a while, drop your oil pan and see how much crap will be there. If you ever pull the rocker covers, go ahead and clean the rockers and oil passages too.
