I've pulled the towers from both of my trucks -- one at 175k miles and the other at 115k. In both cases the original ones were splitting at the base and starting to rust. The bases of them looked almost like layers of pastry opening up, as if the steel was laminated. Not severe enough to be an immediate cause for concern, but it made me happier to have something solid in there in their place.
