Default Shop unable to program remote w/o barcode??

I bought a second remote from someone on eBay, took it to the local Rover shop today and they told me they are unable to program it without "the barcode". Testbook requires that good to be entered to program the remote into the cars computer. Without knowing the original car's VIN is there another way to find out the barcode? Or another way to program the fob?

That would have been a waist of my $$... $50 for the fob and $45 for them to TRY and install it... Oh, and a Saturday morning...

They are full of it.
It "learns" the new remote.
They just want to sell you one of their remotes.
Call another dealer, even if you do not have another one just call and ask them...
"Hey, I am looking at buying a remote off of e-bay, can you guys program it? Even with no barcode? Really? Great, thank you."

Well, not sure if the guy was full of it, or if he didn't know what he was doing... I was standing right next to him when he was attempting. He spent at least 45 minutes on it and asked 2 other guys in the shop. That's a good idea though, I will call around, and see what they say.

I just dont see how they need the bar code, how many remotes are out there and you cannot tell me that they all have the barcode still intact.
From what I understand they plug into the trucks ECU, tell it to learn the new remote, point it at the truck and BAM!, it works.
I could be totally wrong.

Well, I will call around on Monday and see what the responses are. I will report back. In the mean time, if someone else has the answer, feel free...!

Did you get a definitive answer about your eBay key fob reprogramming? I bought one on eBay, too, and then was told by the dealer that it couldn't be reprogrammed. The eBay seller said it would be no problem. I am very curious regarding what you found out.

It is my opinion that the dealers are losing money to e-bay by not selling new remotes so they are coming up with these stories to make you buy a new remote from them.
Ask DiscoMike, he will know for sure.

no. you do need the bar code. the remote works on a rolling codes, and the barcode is the key to that code... however, they didnt know what they were doing, because you can get that bar code... open up the remote like you were changing the battery and take out the circuit board, carefully. youll see a little sticker with a 6 digit code on it, pm me that code here and ill get you the bar code you need
