Should I buy this Disco?
Im looking at this disco, 1999 II 83k miles, 4.0L in it asking $4,495. This will be the first car i have thats actully mine, although im 17, i know how these work, and am willing to do work on them myself for small jobs. im also figuring in about $1k in repair costs over a few years. i havent driven it yet, but i plan to this week. Is there any problems i should be aware of for this year? what price do you think would be acceptable? My father knows the manager of the dealer, and sold ford motors to them, so i can proably get a good deal.
Here's the link to the disco (hyperlink) the url is to big as its an Autotrader listing.
edit: I see the left headlamp in the picture looks like its yellowing. anything you can do about that, or is it just a new headlight?

looks like a good deal. I bought my '99 DII with 74K miles on it about 6 months ago and gave $6k just to give you some reference. I bought mine private party, tell them you want that price out the door (tax, title)
Ok don't buy it until you've put around 50 miles on it at the least. Take it on the highway for a half hour, drive it around town for a half hour. Things to look out for are any lights on the dash that are on. Do a search on this forum for the 3 amigos. It's a common problem with DIIs and could be an easy fix, but sometimes it's not. You MUST use premium gas, and you MUST have your front driveshaft rebuilt with greasable U joints and a centering ball kit. Any driveshaft place can do it for about $300 or less, if you don't do it some one has a picture of their tranny after the driveshaft failed and put some nice aerodynamic holes in it :P
So yeah, go drive it and report every little detail here. Any lights on the dash, any noises you think aren't right, any weird vibrations, any anything.
Hope it's a good one cause these trucks are fantastic. My DI is my first car too, and I love it so far. Gas mileage doesn't bother me in the least, even for a starving college kid

Can someone explain to me, the whole thing about having the driveshaft replaced. I bought my 2000 disco with 76k six months ago. Do i need to replace the driveshaft??
My disco was my first car as well, and so far its been awesome. When we were going to buy mine, we drove it around for about an hour or two on the highway and on regular roads. While you're driving it check everything on the car (A/C, lights, buttons, ect). We looked at one that would not shift into 1st of 2nd gear... those are the ones you run away from... fast. If the person you are buying it from is honest and reliable, that is a huge help. But still bring it by a shop to have it looked over.
That's a great price assuming everything is in tact. You'll love the disco once you have one, even if its not that particular one. Dont rush into buying it if you dont feel 100% about it. I almost did, and I would be driving a black disco with 130,000 miles and a golf ball dent on the hood... luckily I waited and got mine (ruby red)in perfect condition with 89,000 miles on it FOR THE SAME PRICE. Good luck! If you have any questions after testing it out, let us know!

alright, hopefully the dealer guy dosent ride with us (i hate that). haze *points to sig*, im the caretaker of the family disco, so i know about the premium gas and such =) . any more advice about non - facelifted disco's would be also appreciated.
Cam i love your red disco, that would be my first choice! then, grey then black then...

I bought my 99 DII S class with 97k for $4900 last april. I then put 2k into it to make it as reliable as I could.
radiator, timing cover, diff, pully, rear axel seal... etc.
The absolute best thing you could do for yourself, is take it to an INDEPENDENT rover specific mechanic to do a pre buy inspection.
They'll go through the whole thing and tell you how much you'll need to spend. If you don't do this, you better have a good stack of maintenance records that fixes all the common problems.
