Default Should I Buy this Parts Truck?

So, there is a 2000 Disco 2 for sale near my home. I've got a 99 Disco 2 with an engine knock (lifters or rockers) and a leaky crank seal with a few other minor issues.

The 2000 for sale is $700 and has a hole in the transmission from the front driveshaft. I'm wondering, since I don't have the time right now to fix the knock myself and I'll be paying a shop, should I pay the 10 hours in labor to swap the motor, or pay the 12 hours in labor to replace lifters? Another option is to swap that transmissions and drive the 2000. The body is in great shape, compared to mine.

If I were to do that, the issue becomes putting all of my accessories, (listed in signature) on the newer truck. It would take a LOT of time, but might be worth it. Plus, I could do it in my spare time over weekends.

What would you do?

This is the parts truck.

From the picture, that is a thing of beauty. I'd buy it for a spare, but I can't give you that advice. All the standard disclaimers apply.

Near me the boneyards get $125 + core for a transmission. Seems like if it was just the transmission, he might be going down the same path. Are there other issues, like overheating or engine tick? Certainly things to consider.

As for your top end knock, it could be just rocker arm.

A finger can smear RTV around the crank seal, let it cure, then crank. It will split in a hairline, and make a temporary reduction in oil lost from that spot, which is blown around by the fan.

$700? I'd get it if I had somewhere to keep it and part it out! Good for wierd spares, body panels, glass, interior rips... window motors/regulators... you coudl also sell the rims pretty easy, and scrappers would love the axels and rotors lol

A clean looking white beauty for only $700?! I'd get it and replace the trans and drive shaft and part out the 99.

I dislike Disco's and I'd buy that if the inside is as clean as the outside appears to be.

Excellent input, gents! Thanks for the replies.

After talking with the wife and the 2000 owner, I'm going to look at it tomorrow. The driver's seat has some tears and the headliner is sagging. Aside from that, it's got a dent on the passenger's rear quarter panel, which is identical to mine. It's got around 90k miles on it and ran perfectly before the drive shaft gave out.

My wife suggested I buy it and order a transmission. I've already got the drive shaft for it. She also suggested that I just fix the lifters/rocker arm/whatever it is and have 2 Rovers. She's awesome. I'll have my current one running to be an off-road machine and the white one as a daily driver.

The next question would be: What's the best place to get a used transmission?

Thanks again for the input.
