I drive a 2003 Disco II and while at work the other day... a fellow worker calls my on my cell and says, "Hey, I'm at this guys house and he has a Land Rover kinda like yours that he wants to sell for $500. Are you interested?"
I said.... "Heck yea... whats the address?"
So he tells me, and since I was driving at the time... I just go straight to the guys address right then and there. When I pull up.... I see the rig... turns out its a 1999 Disco II, so mostly the same as mine, and really, I've been just looking for a rig to take apart and learn without using MY drive to do it.
The guy shows it to me, says, it runs (starts) and tells me all the stuff he knows that is wrong with it... which is quite a few things. But for $500 I'd be happy to find two or three parts that are broke on my rig and cannibalize this new one.
So the guy tells me he just wants to get rid of it and he is sure he can talk his gf (who actually owns the rig) into selling it for $500. He wants it out of there. Two hours later he calls me and says, she will only sell it for $800 if she can't find the title ....and $1000 if she can find it.
I'm disheartened and tell the guy.... no thanks..... but to call me back if it doesn't sell in a week or two and I'll still buy it for $500.

Should I have taken it for $800 or $1000 depending ? That still seems pretty cheap for a whole vehicle problems and all. I was just ticked that he pulled me in with a $500 lure.... then changed the price

 

Sounds like he saw your keenness and has tried to capitalize on it.

I would go quiet. Then when he tries to tempt you again list all the known issues, and the ones it might have, and how it's a parts truck to you, running or not.

Of course it might be that it is worth 1000, and he could get that from someone else, but if 500 is your figure, stick to it.

 

I agree - $500 is a good number for a truck you don't need.

 

I don't deal with people that do that dumb stuff. Your call....if you have the patience....

 

Hold your ground. He will be back. Don't be afraid to call and make the same offer in two weeks.

I'd definitely wait and see if he calls back with 500. If he calls back in two weeks and says 800, offer him 500 again. If he says no, I'd still take it for 800. I wouldn't pay 1000 though if you don't need it.

 

The key being if you have the room for it, At this point, you are sitting in the drivers seat. Sounds like they want to sell it more than you want to buy it. Wait it out. if someone scoops it , find out who they sold it to and then get your parts.

 

This is true. The mrs. already said she doesn't want a broken down car in the drive. And actually, I don't either. Well, the waiting game has started. I'll post if something happens.

 

There must by now be an average dollar amount a part out vehicle can fetch.

Obviously linked to what works and what doesn't. Assuming all parts can ship to where there is a buyer, or buyers are local enough.

Say a standard 2000 SE. Head gasket failure. Average condition all round fetches between $X and $Y when parted out for a while then crushed.

I'm gonna guess $700-$1500.
