I have been looking at this disco for a couple weeks now on CL and I am sure I can get it for 1600 USD. It is running rough but that is all the information I have. I have read numerous posts about rough running disco II's and was wondering if it is worth the chance. It is going to be our beach car so its not going to be an everyday driver but I am not looking to buy a paper weight either. Let me know your opinions. I have owned a 98 disco and have an emotional attachment I just cant seem to get away from no matter how much money they take away from me Any input would be much appreciated.

People pay more than that for a running D1. The realistic approach is that it could be parted out for most of that $1600. If it will test drive OK, and run at idle for 20 minutes without massive overheat (take a scanner to read codes and digital coolant temp), it seems like a reasonable project truck. If you were talking $4,000 and such, have a mechanic check it. At this price your risk is considerably less. Of course each "little" thing, like trouble codes on, overheating, prop shaft needs rebuilding because no grease fittings, you'll have some more negotiating room. And plenty of work to keep you busy. Plugs, wires, clean MAF and throttle body and IACV....

Buying a D2 that moves under its own power for less than a zero turn lawn mower sounds good to me.

 

I am going to look at this weekend and pull the trouble codes and do some research but after hearing that I am definitely looking to buy. Thanks for the advice, Ill update once I get some codes off of it.

 

If you can get it for 1600 you can't lose. You could part it out and double your money. The motor (if it hasn't been overheated) is worth that alone.

 

I was buying and reselling Discovery 2's. The #1 problem you need to address with any disco 2 is the front driveshaft. Half or more of the ones i bought had damaged u-joints even though they ran fine. I learned to check the drive shafts after my dads disco 2 drive shaft broke and smashed his transmission to pieces.
