Default this should be quick and easy!

evening gents (and ladies)...problem for today is.....
water is leaking.
there is a 1.5 inch square piece of aluminum bolted to the underside of the throttle body, 2 pipes connect to it, one from the coolant reservoir and the other to the top front of the engine.
the gasket on this item has started to leak. I have removed it from the car and cleaned it up removing the old gasket.
Other than restrict the water flow, what does this do?....and could i just make a gasket out of gasket paper?....if i HAD to drive could i leave it off the vehicle and just connect the 2 pipes together with a coupler?.
any ideas??

It raises the temperature of the air entering the throttle body helping to atomize the fuel better. As I understand it. I would make a homemade gasket out of a roll of good gasket material before I left it off.

I edited out the retardation.

That is the throttle body heater and it only costs $25 for the kit.

great answers, very helpful. I thought it was some kind of crazy design to do apparently nothing....what a clever idea it turns out. so i assume i can drive with it disconnected for a while. i made a gasket out of good gasket material but it leaked almost straight away. I'll order the kit tomorrow but need to be able to drive until it gets here

Yes you can bypass it for now, get a "U" piece of pipe and clamp it in place until you can fix it proper.
