Default Sleight Engine Knock in a 04 4.6 v8

Before taking my truck in to my local dealer for minor service (non engine related) I begun to notice engine knocking while at idol. I run 93 octane gas, (sunoco) and I am curious as to why the engine is knocking. The odd thing is that after taking it in for service the knocking is almost gone. But I have a feeling it will be back soon enough. What can I do to ensure that it won't come back.

You sure it's a knock? I am no expert on these engines but it could just be the lifters (which is normal on high mileage engines). You said it only does it at idle so that is why I am suggesting it. The reason it goes away right after service is the oil change more than likely (the oil viscosity breaks down according to weather/driving conditions and sometimes you will hear the lifter noise and sometimes you will not depending on the oil type/condition). You can hide it with different oil weights/viscosity sometimes, least that's what we do with the Jeeps (Jeeps are my only insight atm I am new to Land Rovers). To totally fix it, it was easy to readjust the lifters in the Jeep 4cyc, but the 6cyc is was a pain in the ***. I am asssuming it would not be fun on a DiscoII V8 either, but someone else will have to help with that who has worked on these engine.

Yeah, a knock is loud man. And it would not go away after idle. It would get louder (speed up). You would be freaking out. hehe

If I am totally off here, I am sorry. New to the forums, just trying to help.

Hey thanks for the insight, i guess its more of a ticking its not that noticable at driving speeds but at idol its pretty noticable. I am running 5-40w synthetic oil. But also I have just below 60k on the engine. So I'll talk to my service manager and ask him about the lifters.

I have a knocking sound when i start to press the gas and after a while it almost goes away but now sure what going on.. i used to have regular oil and the last oil change i switched to synthetic oil. could that cause problems?

the sound i think is coming from the bottom. could it be the heads or gaskets? or maybe the cranshaft?

What oil are you using? What weight? How often do you change it?

Mine had a slight ticking at idle. No additives or synthetics would fix it. I threw in Royal Purple 5w30 in it, and it quieted down right away. My family told me "Something's wrong with your Rover Alan....it's too quiet". My oil consumption went from 2 quarts every 3,000 miles to Zero quarts every 3,000.

Some people love the oil, some people dispise it. I guess it really depends how much you're willing to pay to get rid of that knock

Wow BamaBoy that was a lot of oil consumption. Did you try Mobil 1 10w40 high mileage. Just curious. I use a less than 1/4 of quart per 5000 miles. I know Royal purple has great oil. Seems like its worth its price if it cures your problem. I have debated putting it in my diffs and TC case. Or go with the Tech stuff from Walmart and change it more often. (like Spike does)
