Default Slight oil leak and Syn oil question

Hey folks,

I have a slight oil leak...had it for some time now i think. Mostly shows on oil filter and back of oil pan by the bellhousing. I'm using Mobil 1 10-W40 and have been for a while. Has anyone had luck with switching to a heavier dino oil to stop these small leaks? I have 113,000 on the clock.

Thanks,

Could be a simple fix or could be a head gasket leaking from the front, running down the blocka and then along the pan to the back where it drips down the bell housing, ask me how I know.... It could also be the oil sending unit on the front passenger side of the block above the oil filter. Clean the engine well and then try to find the source. Phil

For smaller leaks switching to a synthetic oil rather from dino may help to shore up your seals, it will leak like the Dickens for the first few changes, but then it should taper off a bit.

.....or are already using synthetic?

Sure am. Have been for years. It hasn't seemed to get any worse since I noticed it years ago...maybe 1/2 qt total between oil changes. Just changed my HG's too, so that's not it. I'll get under there with a powerwasher and clean it out and see if I can't pinpoint the leak.

Thanks!

Thanks, Phil. Just changed the HG's so they should be fine. I'll clean it up today and se what I can find.

Hey - We both joined the group at the same time...cool!

I have been running Mobil 1 for the last 3 plus years and have no oil leaks.
Stay with it and if the leaks you have are too bad, get them fixed, end result, it is better on your engines wear.

There is a really large bolt that sits near the oil filter. I started pissing oil one day and found that it was hand tight. Cant hurt to check it out!
