Sluggish, popping, stalling....fun
Hi Danny,
There is only one Shell in our area and it's nowhere near the normal route of my travel. I did find a Exxon fairly near by. Good to read you have yours up and running.
To update my problems:
After having my Disco for 2 1/2 days all the shop managed to do was check fuel pressure and put a gouge/scratch on the pass rear corner. They said the problem was there thursday but couldn't duplicate it on friday.
Fuel pressure is 30PSI at idle. They couldn't check it going down the road under load.
I had a fuel filter and asked them to install it. They couldn't and rounded off the tank end of the filter fitting.. Going to take it to a different shop to fix that...and for future repairs.
When I left the shop friday my tank was nearly empty so I set out for Exxon. I got about a 1/4 mile away and the truck started having no power and making noise. I threw it in neutral and coasted it in. Added the second half bottle of Lucas fuel treatment and added a half tank of fuel. Drove home fine aside from the ping/rattle issue.
When I got it home I hit it with seafoam. I used 1/3 bottle through the brake booster line slowly. Let it sit 20mins and took it for a ride around the block a few times. Absolutely zero smoke.
I drove it around a little bit saturday and to work yesterday. Didn't have any of the sluggish/chugging/missing/no power problems. I don't recall if the ping/rattle issue is still there, it's been raining and I had the windows up.

I'm not going to say it's cured but......I've been driving it alot the last few days and no sluggishness, popping, chugging, ping or rattle.
I don't know if it was the seafoam, the second half bottle of Lucas, the Exxon premium fuel or a combonation of all three.
Now tomorrow on my way to work it will probably blow up or catch on fire....
Thanks everyone for the help, ideas and suggestions.

Jay,
Are you forgetting to offer praises to THE ROVER GODS before you fire it up every day. Failure to do so may lead to unexpected problems at the most inoportune times.
It may sound crazy, but if you develop your own Mantra to chant as you approach the vehicle, you may enjoy it more. I am still doing a few little things with mine, but it did sail right thru inspection and I am once again legal to operate it on the paved roads of our fabulous CommonWealth.
If only I had some wealth left. We will have to get together one day when you have some time and hopefully we can give the Disco's a chance to dance.
I ran a bottle of that Lucas Complete Fuel Treatment thru mine, it runs fine. Hopefully yours was a gunk problem that will clear up with the Premium fuel usage. I know I plan to use only the premium in the future, I ran mostly the midgrade in mine when I first got it. When I did my oil change lately i used a bottle of Gunk brand 5 minute Engine Flush just prior to draining, what came out was solid black.
I also have a can of Seafoam I plan to use and then a new filter and oil change in about 1000 miles just to be sure about it getting cleaner.
Good Luck with yours.

Well it was nice while it lasted.
The Rover started the ping/rattle games again.
I have been using premium fuel, either Sunoco 93 or Exxon 93 with Lucas addative.
I used 1/3 bottle of seafoam through a vacumm line last week and it "cured" it for a little while.
New plugs (NGK gapped at .035)
New wires (Kingsborne)
Yesterday when I fueled (half tank) I added 1/2 bottle of Lucas power cleaner.
The noise isn't constant all the time. Sometimes when I drive it it makes the noise, other times it doesn't make any noise.
Codes read are:
1194 - Oxygen Sensor Heater High Resistance Downstream
1191 - Oxygen Sensor Heater Circuit Open Downstream
300 - Misfire On Multiple Cylinder
304 - Misfire Cylinder 4
1316 - Misfire Excessive Emissions Fault
Would a O2 sensor be a good suspect for the trouble?

Jay, I don't think your O2 sensors are causing this. I'm assuming you reset your your codes after you replaced your wires and plugs.
Multi-misfires. Hmmm. After plug wires? I'm wondering if you don't have a coil pack issue. You might also check quickly that you've got the wires firmly seated into the coils. I just did Kingsborne as well. I was very impressed with quality appearance of them and they seem to perform perfectly, but I didn't like the lack positive "pop" when installing on the coils.
I know it's easy for me to say, but when you find this, it will be something simple. These aren't complex machines, but Gremlins are pretty good at hiding some time!
One thing you posted earlier that may have absolutely nothing to do with the issue; when you ran a can of Seafoam through the intake, you got NO smoke. This perplexes the heck out of me. I'm not a professional mechanic by any stretch, but I'm a better than average shade tree junior wrench monkey. I don't see how you can run a can of that stuff through a brand new motor and not get smoke. Adding a petroleum distilate directly into the induction system should make it smoke. Adding water will make it smoke (another common way to help clean up carbon build-up). When I did the "60K" on my Rover a few weeks ago, my TB was only a little dirty. I cleaned it up and then ran a can of SF through...and it smoked like a truck mounted bug fogger. It was crazy!! And it did it for about five miles.
At any rate, let's let Disco Mike or someone weigh in on the 02 sensors. I'm 90% sure this isn't causing your problem. You got an ignition or possibly an induction problem IMO.
Hang in there!

I was surprised by the lack of smoke after seafoming too. Aside from Spike's experience everything I have read where someone used it created smoke. Perhaps inducing it through the brake booster line it didn't reach the combustion chamber somehow..or something?? I don't know.
I'm going to check and make sure the coil ends of the plug wires are seated properly. Probably going to have to wait until tomorrow for that though..it's raining currently.
I have read about corrosion on the ECU causing problems. Can anyone elaborate on that?
What about injector failure?
Also read about O2 sensor connectors coming loose and corroding. Going to check that tomorrow too.
