Default Snow Tires for '04 Disco

Hey guys,
So far so good on the still new-ish ride.
I was at the mechanics this week (For an oil change) and he suggested I get snow tires for the winter (I travel between NYC and the Poconos -NE PA mountains- roughly once a week)
My current tires are Goodyear Wranglers, I'm pretty sure they're stock (Car is parked in the garage and I'm too lazy to go check exact size)
He thinks that they'll last thru next Spring/Summer if I change to snow tires for winter.
I'm basically doing normal highway driving (roughly 180 miles round trip per week) & some short trips on the weekends (20-40 miles) - no off roading unless it involves collecting some sort of antique up a dirt driveway *ha*
The only thing I foresee is possibly getting a box that attaches to the trailer hitch so I don't have to put the smelly trash/recycling in the car and possibly hauling a small, light trailer if we get around to any house renovations in the winter.

Suggestions?
I'm a Costco member so I'd love to find something they carry & get a better price.

He also suggested having the S belt replaced soon but other than that things seem to be okay.

Thanks!

You have 2 options.
1-buy a good set of A/T's (all terrain tires)
2-buy a set of snow tires.

A/T's will give you good all around performance in the rain/snow/dirt/sand/mud, they will be nosier on the expressway than a standard all season like you probably have now but it wont be bad and they will make your truck look cooler.

If you go with a set of snows then you can only run them for the winter and you will need to store your "old" tires until spring and then you will have to pay to have the snows taken back off and the summer tires put back on.

You already said that your current tires were wearing thin, so buy a new set now could save you money later. (tires prices rise with crude oil prices)

Cooper makes good tires, their M&S tire is a severe snow rated tire but it can also be used in the summer.
Their ATR is a good all around truck tire.
Their S/T is a bad *** tire, GREAT in the snow and really really good off road, it will be the nosiest of the 3. (thats what I have)

Dont enter your vehicle info, just enter your tire size.

But if you really want to buy from Costco just go and shop for tires, write down what you are interested in and then go home and do research on those tires.

Tire Rack has a nice rating system, I dont buy from them but I use them for research.

I like the BFG all terrain KO's, I run them on my f-150 4x4 and the disco. Excellent winter traction, good highway manners, barely and tire noise if at all and a respectable tire for the road less travelled

I run snow tires in the winter, we get about 90inches of snow so they do much better than AT on the periodic ice. Costco does sell some but so does just about all tire stores in poor weather states. I personally run both Pirelli or Hakken. They sell them in the ocrrect size for the Rover so you should be able to get them easily, they will not be cheap though. The good news is that they can last for quite a few years since they are used so little. If you have bad ice then I would look at getting the studded ones as well.

Costco has a sale on Bridgestones if you buy 4. The Dueler is good tire if they are able to get it in our size. Just tell them the size when you go in and ask.

Not to shot down your suggestion,I have run BFG MTs forever, so I like BFG's but the AT's are the worst possible tire to buy if you are wanting better then average traction on mud, snow water and especially ice, they are terrible.

So, what size tires are you running, makes a big difference.
If you want a great year round tire that is great on snow and ice, do a Google for Good Year Dura Trac's. They are a little price, but not to bad and you'll never be concerned about tires again.

No offense mike, I'm not normally on to argue with a person as knowledge as yourself but....if you said the mt's were useless in the snow I'd back you, but most of the plow trucks run the bfg at's here to plow with, I have customers that swap them on for winter on there suv's, I've run them on my trucks for years, including my wreckers. I swear by them....not at them . The wranglers are pretty too, but the closest Goodyear dealer is 150kms away. (I live in Canada btw mike so before you ask....yes I know what snow is!)

I HATE the BFG A/T's, I have ran them on my work van and spent more time being stuck than not.
On ice they just spin, in deep snow they clog.*
Normally I run the Cooper S/T and have no problems at all.
This year I am running something else entirely.
And I go through 2 complete sets of tires a year, I run a meaty A/T in the winter and then once bald I go with a H/T, those last until winter then back to a A/T.

*Your results may vary.
