The fan clutch bolts through the fan to the water pump shaft, so the clutch cant be the problem, it has to be the water pump.
Since your belt is already off...check for play.
See if by chance your fan came unbolted from the water pump, not likely but still possible.
Always check the free/cheap stuff first.
I bought my water pump off of e-bay, it was $100 with shipping and is brand new not rebuilt.
The water pump from a '96-2004 are the same, so any of those years will work.

I'll pull the shroud and the belt tomorrow, if I'm feeling better; I'm pretty sure I'll get play in the fan then; I assume I don't have it now because of the remaining part of the belt pulling it up.

Good to know it's been the same pump since the beginning of that engine; make it a little easier to come by. Autozone wants $160 for the cheap pump, and $230 for the lifetime warranty one.

Anyone got a spare water pump sitting on a shelf in their garage? :-)

Hey, Spike? Roverland (who are local to me) say that D1 and D2 took different pumps.

Though, oddly, they list the same part number (STC4378G, which looks like the same part number as AB) for both; I guess that's just boilerplate on their site. Doesn't matter; they're out of both.

Rovers North has it for $80.

Yeah, but they're in *Maine*. :-)

I see that they have a 4378G, and for half as much money, a 4378. What's the difference?

first thing to ask is what was the last thing you fixed??
If by chance you installed a new serpentine belt and then had the fan problems my guess would be a mis routed belt causing the fan to turn in the opposite direction, this will surly bend the blades towards the fan belts/hoses.
Its happened before

You know guys I removed my bad fan & ran my D1 for a week without overheating while I waited for my $75 (2) 12" fanset to come from summit (works great)

Looking through the RAVE, it looks like this is a job I could do myself....

if I had the cockamamie 2 foot long wrench necessary to pull the fan off.
